Dismissing the allegation, additional district medical offier (admo) PK Mohanty told PTI that both the babies, who died at the district headquarter hospital yesterday, were being treated since their birth as their condition was bad.

In the first case, the six-day old baby girl suffered from scepticaemea since birth and was being given septiline injection twice a day since April 19. She died over an hour after being administered the injection.

"It is improper to conclude that the baby died due to wrong injection, which was given over an hour before her death. While survival in the disease is rare even in advanced countries, her condition was very critical," Mohanty said.

The other infant, a new-born baby boy who died was suffering from acute asphyxia as delivery had been delayed by over 14 hours following refusal by the family members to go for ceasarian section despite advice by doctors, he said.

The baby, facing severe respiratory problem, was given cepine injection as he was in a 'very low condition' and died nearly an hour after being given injection.

The doctor had lodged a complaint alleging manhandling by relatives of the deceased babies but later withdrew it.
The drug inspector has collected samples from the used injection bottles for test and searched the medicine store which had supplied them.
