After a year of their marriage, Madhuri, Prema’s best friend had come to meet both Prema and her husband. After having a sumptuous lunch, they were sitting in the hall chatting like old times. Their discussion gradually turned to their college days and friends. Madhuri told her about a friend, a certain Mr X, who was working as a manager in some firm. He got a car along with a personal secretary from office apart from his air-conditioned cabin! This sounded interesting to Prema.
Madhuri revealed a very confidential episode about Mr X which not only amused Prema, but also shocked her. Madhuri stated that this Mr X is spending several nights out with his secretary without his wife’s knowledge. From further discussion, Prema eventually found out that this Mr X was none other than her own husband!
Prema’s was an inter-cast love marriage and they were very much in love with each other when they got married. Like usual, her husband did not come home that night. As soon as he came back in the morning, a worried Prema repeatedly asked him about his absence. But as usual he insisted that he was working late in the office.
Prema sarcastically said: “Welcome home Mr X.” Her husband was shocked to hear that greeting but showed no signs of surprise. Instead, in a calm voice, he informed once again that he was working late in the office. Prema lost her temper but she somehow controlled herself. Later she put mild poison in the morning in his strong coffee. This poison had its slow effect and her husband died in the hospital after three days.
After her husband’s death in the hospital, Prema confessed to her mother. “He was cheating on me for over a year now. He had an illicit relationship with his secretary. Recently I came to know the details. In a fit of anger, I gave poisoned coffee to him!” “How dare you do such a horrible act?” shouted her shocked mother. “Was there any time during the last three days, when you felt pity for him? “Yes,” Prema replied in a low guilty tone.“And when was it?” her mother eagerly asked. “When he asked for the second cup of coffee.”
