Security has been beefed up in the city in the wake of a call for 'Punjab bandh' on Saturday given by various Sikh organisations on the 30th anniversary of 1984 anti-Sikh riots to press their demand for justice to the riot victims.
A heavy police force will be deployed in the city as a preventive measure to meet any eventuality.
An additional 350 police personnel have been called from PAP Phillaur Academy. Police teams will be stationed at various sensitive points including Model Town, Guru Nanak Mission Chowk and others spots from where Sikh organisations have planned to take out their procession on Saturday.
Most of the private schools and colleges will remain closed on Saturday to avoid any untoward incident.
Directions have been issued to all SHOs to stay on high alert into their areas. Sikh bodies have also organised a meeting with various market associations and educational institutions to persuade them to support the bandh call.
These organisations have also appealed to the state government to support their bandh call and to keep the government offices closed for a day.
