The move comes after the MCC, the tenants of the venue, held discussions with the Metropolitan Police.

Upon entering the ground for the Test match beginning on May 20, all spectators will have their bags searched.

The arrangements will also be in place for all other major fixtures at 'the home of cricket'.

All those attending the First Test are advised to arrive at the ground at least three quarters of an hour earlier than in previous seasons to allow them enough time to clear the security checks.

A statement from MCC said: "The new security policy is being introduced following discussions between MCC and the Metropolitan Police over recent months, and reflects the general need to tighten security in public areas across the capital."
