Security has been tightened at Nepal's only international airport, with passengers banned from carrying liquids and gels inside their hand baggage, officials said on Saturday.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said the rule would apply to passengers on both domestic and international flights from Kathmandu airport.

Passengers will not be allowed to carry any aerosols, gels, toiletries, liquid soap, shaving cream, perfume or toothpaste in their hand baggage, the agency said in a statement.

Baby formula will be examined before being allowed, while items bought at the airport's duty-free shops will be allowed but must be sealed, it said.

The stepped-up security follows Britain's foiling of an alleged terror plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights to the United States.

Security has remained tight at the Kathmandu airport since an Indian Airlines flight bound for the Indian capital was hijacked in 1999.
