Security to be in place for Delhi-Lahore bus service

Chief vigilance officer of the DTC has been asked to put in place an additional security system so that nothing goes undetected in the passengers' luggage, reports Amitabh Shukla.

Increased security measures would be in place for the Delhi-Lahore bus service from Tuesday onwards. Run by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) for two days in a week and by the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) for another two days, the security system is almost like the airports for the passengers in the bus.

"We are concerned with the incident at Panipat. We have asked the chief vigilance officer of the DTC to put in place an additional security system so that nothing goes undetected in the passengers' luggage," said Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf.

Yusuf said the bus departs from the Ambedkar Nagar Terminal and the existing security is quite fool proof. "The bus is escorted out of Delhi by a police pilot vehicle and then when it reaches the Haryana border, it is again escorted by a different police team," said the minister.

The passengers have to get their baggage checked in like air travellers. A thorough frisking and search of the baggage is done before the check in. The passengers are not allowed any access to the checked in baggage during the course of the journey. For cabin luggage, only a small bag is allowed and that too after a thorough scrutiny. Officials said that due to the police escort right up to the international border, they have not noticed anything untoward in the recent months.
