IF YOU want to “actually see” joy on the face of your baby in your womb, then first be joyous yourself. Whatever mood a couple is in, the foetus is likely to have exactly that kind of mood.

“We have seen about 30 different moods of a foetus while it is in womb through 3D and 4D prenatal ultrasound imaging,” said Prof PK Srivastava of Department of Radiotherapy, King George’s Medical University.

The city already has about three 3-dimensional/4-dimensional ultrasound imaging machines. As the technique is revolutionary in prenatal diagnosis as well as many other diagnoses, more machines are likely to come up in the city in time to come. “We have seen foetus in various moods —laughter, joy, smile, naughty, mischievous, sorrow, depressive, brooding, or lethargy. If there is love and joy in a couple, the foetus reflects love and joy. If there is disharmony in a couple, the foetus’ face reflects depression, sorrow, brooding. If there is anger, the babyy’s face reflects anger. And now we or a couple or a mother can actually see it with 3D-4D ultrasound imaging,” said Prof Srivastava while talking to HT.

“And now with this technology, a new concept called ‘foetus behaviour’ has come up and we can also observe foetus behaviour through these machines that so far had not known side effects as they use harmless ultrasound waves to make images. The city has two or three such machines in private sector, and they may soon increase in number,” said Prof Srivastava.

While to an institution the machine costs about Rs 50 lakh, for a client or patient it is just about Rs 1,000. The technique is a boon for trauma patients; it easily detects ligament or vascular injuries. It is also a boon for organ conservation surgeries, like to save a breast from removal in breast cancer, 3D ultrasound can pinpoint the exact size, volume and location of a tumor or how a tumor is invading any blood vessels.

An international study says that ‘a happy foetus becomes a happy child’. So, it’s parents can impart an attitude to a child much before it is born. And they can impart the desired ones - by first changing theirs’ if it required changes.
