President of Lok Abhiyan and former V-C of the university Prof Radhey Mohan Mishra and secretary Syed Akhtar Ali said eastern UP was economically backward. It had low development indices in comparison to other parts of the state. The infant and maternal mortality rate in the region was high, enrolment in schools was lowand disease patterns in the area needed urgent attention for the development and well-being of the people.

They said a large number of children were engaged in household and other economic activities, which was a hindrance in the way of their right to education.

Mishra said keeping children away from the mainstream of development and education would adversely affect the social and economic progress of country.

He said in the emerging situation in the region, children were forced to go to work for survival of the family.

Syed Akhtar Ali said the two-day seminar would discuss the child labour problem in rural and urban areas , factors responsible for child labour, child labour and law and propose an action plan to eliminate it. In the first session, lectures would be delivered on socio-economic computation causing child labour and in the second session, towards solution of child labour problem. In the third session, ‘Child Labour: Relevant Laws and Policies’ would be taken up by the speakers.
