DS Dhesi is set to become the new chief secretary of Haryana after the Union government repatriated him to the state cadre six months before his central deputation was set to end.
Dhesi held the charge of additional secretary in the Union commerce ministry, besides being the chairman-cum-managing director of public sector trade body Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC).
“We have repatriated him at the request of the Haryana government, which wants to appoint him as the chief secretary there,” a top official from the prime minister’s office said.
Dhesi will have a long tenure as CS as he is scheduled to retire in June 2019.
Haryana came under the Bharatiya Janata Party rule in October this year, four months after the party came to power at Centre.
In the ministry of commerce, Dhesi was responsible for monitoring and review of export strategy, administration and establishment, and foreign trade with African countries.
Deshi is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1982 batch with Haryana as his parent cadre. He had been on central deputation since June 2010 and was supposed to stay on till June 2015.

“He (Dhesi) is considered an upright and a very efficient officer,” said one of Dhesi’s batch mates, who is currently posted at Centre.
