A second year student of a college in Hyderabad was beaten up and tortured by his classmates because he was trying to protect the freshers from those looking for soft targets to rag. On Wednesday, M Sharvan Kumar’s classmates beat him up with copper rods and removed the nail of his little finger.

Kumar was admitted to a hospital with bruises all over his body and a bleeding finger by his father, a doctor.

Kumar, a second year student at Sri Chaitanya Junior College, said his classmates were angry with him for moving around the campus with freshers. “They couldn’t rag the freshers with me on their side. I spoiled their plans.”

In a complaint lodged with the Hyderabad police, Kumar said four of his classmates — Navin Chowdary, Vikas Reddy, Saif and Md Nazeemuddin — used to harass him for mixing with juniors. Unable to bear the harassment he went on leave for eight days and returned to college on June 30. A day later he was attacked.

“He was reluctant to go back to college, but I wanted him to go back so that he wouldn’t miss classes. I wanted him to succeed in the Emecet (the entrance exam for engineering and medicine),” said M. Ravinder, Kumar’s father.
