Abdul Wahab, a student of Anand Engineering College, was admitted to a private hospital with both legs fractured and spinal chord injured on Monday night.

An FIR was lodged on Wednesday by his father Mohammad Inam at the Sikandra police station after the police intervened. Earlier, college authorities had told Wahab’s parents not to report the matter. “We were told my son’s career would be ruined if we filed an FIR,” Inam told HT.

The college administration, while denying it was a case of ragging, has constituted a panel to probe the incident. Wahab’s family has alleged he was asked to pay Rs 2,000 per month to his seniors. “My son told me about the demand for money, but I thought it was a routine affair for all freshers,” said Inam, a farmer from a village near Meerut. “My son was studying when four boys came and demanded money. He was then dragged out, beaten up and pushed from the third floor,” he said.

Wahab’s parents, who rushed from Meerut on getting information, were allegedly threatened by college administration to keep mum. Wahab had been in the college for just 15 days and was not able to identify the culprits. The FIR says that Wahab’s seniors took Rs 2,300 from him before pushing him from the college building.

However, teachers at the nursing home denied it was a case of ragging. Wahab had got direct admission in the second year B.Tech course after completing a diploma.
