Sensex climbs 172 pts in early trade

The index climbs largely due to strong rally in Infosys and other heavyweight stocks on buying by foreign funds.

The benchmark Sensex hit a record high of 13,678.04 points in early trade on Friday largely on the back of strong rally in technology major Infosys and other heavyweight stocks on buying by foreign funds.

The BSE-30 share index Sensex, which rose by over 36 points on Thursday, climbed by 172.15 points to touch new high of 13,678.04 points five minutes after opening.

Similarly, the National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, gained 15.00 points at 3,891.85.

IT giant, Infosys Technologies stocks flared up by a hefty Rs 201, or almost 8 per cent, at Rs 2401.

Other gainers were BHEL, Larsen and Toubro, NTPC, Reliance Industries, Reliance Communications,Ranbaxy Lab, ONGC, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Udyog, ACC, Grasim Industries, Tata Steel and Reliance Energy.
