Sensex closes 12,347.63, up 0.3%

On the rival National Stock Exchange, the 50-stock S&P CNX Nifty ended 0.4 per cent up at 3,648.40.

Indian shares touched a new record high for the third session in a row on Thursday with funds buying Reliance Industries and banking shares.

The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-stock Sensitive Index, or Sensex, closed 0.3 per cent up at 12,347.63, after trading between 12,264.14 and 12,482.91 points intra-day.

On the rival National Stock Exchange, the 50-stock S&P CNX Nifty ended 0.4 per cent up at 3,648.40.

Reliance Industries Ltd led the gains, climbing 4.3 per cent on hopes of a strong listing next week for its refining unit Reliance Petroleum.

Expectations of improved net interest margins after recent loan rate hikes by some banks spurred more buying in banking stocks, lifting ICICI Bank Ltd 1.8 per cent and Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd by 2.2 per cent.
