Sensex up 51 points in early trade

The BSE index gains ground on fresh buying by funds and retail investors in select blue-chip stocks.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark, Sensex, surged by over 51 points in early trading on Thursday on fresh buying by funds and retail investors in select blue-chip stocks.

The 30-share sensitive index, which had gained 45.72 points on Wednesday, was up by 51.54 points at 12,418.45 in the first five minutes of trading.

In similar fashion, the Nifty index on the wide-based National Stock Exchange rose by 8.05 points at 3,587.35.

The major gainers were Tata Steel, Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto, HDFC, ACC, State Bank of India, Cipla, Wipro, ICICI Bank, Reliance Energy and Hindustan Lever.
