Hardline Hurriyat Conference on Friday organised funeral prayers in absentia in several mosques for Pakistani prisoner Ranjay, who died on Thursday after succumbing to injuries sustained in an attack inside Jammu's Kot Bhalwal jail on May 3.
"The murderous attack on Ranjay was politically motivates. He is a martyr," said 82-year-old Geelani, who, according to the Hurriyat spokesman, was not allowed to participate in funeral prayers of Ranjay.
He claimed he had warned the authorities of reprisal attacks after Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh dies in Pakistan "because of poor security system".
Separatists have raised pitch to shift all detainees of Kashmir origin to the state from outside jails. "The Amnesty International and other international organisations should take cognisance of plight of detainees in jails," said Geelani, who alleged that that a separatist leader Mir Hafeezullah is missing from a jail and the relatives are not being told his whereabouts.
Moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has also called upon both India and Pakistan to exchange prisoners who have served sentences.
Meanwhile, the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) observed a strike and abstained from work in local courts in the valley on Friday.
