Australian Open champion Serena Williams has pulled out of the WTA Bangalore Open tennis tournament due to illness.
"She was supposed to arrive in Bangalore on Saturday morning, but she was unwell and was unable to take the flight," Tournament Manager Sunil Yajaman told Hindustan Times from Bangalore on Saturday. "The WTA (Women's Tennis Association) have confirmed that she is withdrawing."
Serena was the chief attraction at the week-long event, which starts on Monday. Now the onus of sustaining interest in the tournament is on Indian star Sania Mirza.
