Reigning Olympic doubles champion Serena Williams pulled out of the tournament in Athens just days before the event started.

The former number one has been suffering from a left knee injury, which had forced her to earlier withdraw from tournaments in San Diego and Montreal.

She became the second high-profile player to withdraw from the Games in as many days, joining Jennifer Capriati, who withdrew a day before.
