Motorists travelling from Delhi to Gurgaon got some relief from the usual rush at the expressway toll plaza during peak hours on Monday, thanks to a new arrangement by the traffic police.
To decongest Shankar Chowk, the traffic police partially opened the service lane here, allowing vehicles to take a left turn towards Ambience Mall and reach Iffco Chowk.
The ongoing construction work of the Rapid Metro Rail system at this point has also hampered the smooth left-turn for vehicles going towards Cyber City, creating a chock-a-block-situation during rush hours.
Thousands of office-goers who live in Delhi pass through the toll plaza to reach their work places in Gurgaon, causing massive jam on the expressway during peak hours.
Shankar Chowk, one of the intersections that link several landmarks of the Millennium City to the expressway, becomes a major bottleneck for the daily commuters.
As an experiment, the traffic police on Friday removed two barricades from the expressway service lane to assess the impact on traffic movement on Monday. Though the space was just enough to accommodate two vehicles at a time, motorists got a big relief. "We have tackled the morning mess here to some extent and we will continue with this arrangement," said a traffic police officer.
Earlier, all vehicles touching this diversion point had to take a 1.5-km detour around the Infinity Towers in Cyber City. But with the new arrangement, around 30% vehicles could go straight towards Iffco Chowk.
