THE SESSIONS court, here on Friday, dismissed the bail plea of accused Bharat Nath Shukla who was found prima facie guilty of attempting to extort Rs 50 lakh from Sahara Pariwar by issuing threats.
According to the prosecution, the accused rang up complainant Navin Singh on the night of May 9, 2005. After disclosing his identity, he asked to be connected to O P Srivastava. With no response forthcoming, the accused asked Navin to tell his boss to send Rs 50 lakh if he did not want his company and Srivastava to land in trouble.
The threat was issued on a mobile phone. The investigating officer filed a chart of the recorded conversation between the accused and the complainant procured from the Telephone Department.
It was further said that the accused had earlier filed a habeas corpus petition in an unauthorised manner in the Lucknow bench of the high court for producing managing director of Sahara Pariwar Subrato Roy. He had made Roy’s wife and real brother as opposite parties in the petition, that the high court dismissed with adverse remarks against the accused.
Looking at the seriousness of the matter, the sessions court was of the view that the accused was not entitled to bail. The bail plea was accordingly rejected.

THE DEBTS Recovery Tribunal (DRT) Bar Association held a festive meet on the DRT premises, here on Friday to celebrate Diwali and Id ‘milan’ between the Bench and the Bar, including staff and representatives of the various financial institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, DRT chief Narendra Kumar welcomed the Bar’s gesture and expressed his best wishes to the august gathering. He hoped that such events would continue to be held in the future to promote the feeling of love affection and brotherhood.
