Protesting against the alleged dilly-dallying tactics by the police administration, the residents of Maharajganj town hit the streets on Thursday and forced the traders to pull down their shutters.
They also blocked traffic movement and gheraoed the Kotwali police station shouting slogans against the police personnel and demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants involved in the murder of Mrityunjay Singh.
Sanjay Singh, the brother of the deceased said that his brother was missing from November 13 and he had registered an FIR on November 14. But while the police were still to start the investigations, the body of Mritunjay along with his footwear and jacket was found in a sugar cane mill. In the meantime, SP Maharajganj, Tarun Gaba clarified that the main accused, Aslam resident of Gabdua village has been arrested and also confirmed that the body of Mritunjay was recovered by the police.
Gaba further added that the motive behind the murder seemed to be a love affair but other possibilities could not be ruled out. He also informed that the Kotwali incharge is looking after this case. Meanwhile, tension is prevailing in the locality as the accused and the victim belong to two different communities.
The news of the murder of Mrityunjay spread like a wild fire in the town and protesting against it the people hit the street. The angry mob started pelting stones on buses and other vehicles as well as the police station. Later police resorted lathicharge to disperse the agitated mob. Police constable Rajendra Yadav sustained serious injuries in stone pelting.
According to sources one dozen agitators also sustained injuries due to the lathicharge and were presently undergoing treatment at various private hospitals.
SP Maharajganj is camping at Kotwali in view of the prevailing tension and police patrolling has been intensified in the entire town to avert any untoward incident.
