SEVERAL STUDENTS were injured, two of them seriously, in a group clash on the last day of polling for students’ union election. The incident took place outside the VSSD college here on Monday.

Both the groups freely used crude bombs creating panic in the area. However, the police intervention brought the situation under control.

The seriously injured were rushed to a private hospital for treatment. According to eye witnesses, the trouble started when two groups clashed with each other over alleged misleading of voters.

The police cane-charged students following violent clashes between two groups of student in the third and the last phase of polling for the students’ union election here on Monday noon. At least 12 students were injured in the incident that took place outside the VSSD college campus.

Eyewitnesses said the trouble started when two groups of candidates’ supporters clashed over misleading student voters. Members of both the groups freely used crude bombs injuring the outgoing president Prahlad Dixit and his supporters. However, the group that started all this could not be identified till the reports last came in.

No violence of any kind was reported from the two other colleges. However, only 30 per cent of students have cast their votes on the last day. The polling percentage at two girls colleges was less than 30 per cent as the students did not turn up to cast their votes.

At Mahila Maha Vidyalay, out of 4200 students, 1,082 girls voted to elect the president and the general secretary. According to the principal, no election for the post of vice- president and the joint secretary was held but those who got second position were nominated as the vice-president and the joint secretary of the union.

A large number of girls who did not turn up said that they were not interested in union election. They said union elections were nothing but a time wasting process.

At DG college there is no union as such. The college has three separate councils for each discipline and the office- bearers of each council were elected by the students of that faculty.

Three presidents, three vice presidents, two secretaries and six joint secretaries were elected. The college has the strength of about 5000 students. Out of which only 775 girls participated in the election. The VSSD College has the strength of 6,938 students but only 2,399 students participated in the polling.
This is for the first time that a student belonging to backward class has been elected to the post of president. He was the unanimous choice of the Samjwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.
