Shahriar Nafees is the only left-hand opening batsman in the Bangladeshi squad. At 19, Shahriar was included in the Test squad against England.
In the NatWest Series he scored 75 in the final one-dayer against Australia. He made his Test debut in Sri Lanka in September 2005, and made 51 in his second match. He also got starts in all the one-day games, but converted only one into a fifty.
In April 2006 he struck a fabulous hundred, his maiden first-class ton as well as his first in Tests, at Fatullah.
Nafees was appointed vice-captain for the Champions Trophy in India in October with the view of grooming a successor for Habibul Bashar. He was also named Bangladesh's cricketer-of-the-year award this year.
