Simran Bijlani, 22, is high on the success of her four-month-old, designer bag label, Inkberri. A graduate of the fashion department of S.N.D.T University, one of her bags was recently picked up by a stylist from the movie Aisha. “Before I knew it, the model Lisa Haydon was carrying one of my clutches to an Aisha promotion,” says the excited designer.

Bijlani’s own fetish for bags has been the driving force behind starting her own label. “I would buy loads of bags and drive my mom crazy,” says Simran. “So I thought, why not make my own? Even though I studied fashion designing I was always more inclined to making bags and now I am doing just that,” she says proudly. “With a little start-up money from my parents, I hired a few karigars (craftsmen) and now my business is in full swing,” she adds.

The idea for the label name came to Simran when she chanced upon the inkberry flower, the aesthetics of which inspired her. “I love the way the colours blend in this flower. It was my only choice for a label name,” she says.
