Everything was ready— The stage, the garland, the dais, the mike and the students at the DPA auditorium. They called off the function at the eleventh hour (virtually at 11.00 am) after the gurus refused to turn up. Meanwhile, the Lucknow University professors observed the Teacher’s Day as Dhikkar Diwas and demanded immediate implementation of the Lyngdoh panel recommendations on student’s election reforms during their tree plantation drive on Tuesday. The report has already been submitted to the Supreme Court and should be put into practice, they demanded. They said they would write a letter to the Chief Justice of India to enforce recommendations of Lyngdoh committee at the earliest.

It may be recalled that the university teachers’ bodies had refused to observe the Day in protest against the Ujjain incident. The LU Teachers’ Association (LUTA) holds that the student’s union poll should not be held, the LU Associated College Teachers’ Association (LUACTA) wants enforcement of the Lyngdoh committee’s proposals first.

According to LUTA and LUACTA members, student leaders have crossed all limits and it is high time teachers jointly fought for their respect and tame the student leaders. LUTA paid tributes to the departed soul by planting saplings near LU Staff Club while LUACTA staged symbolic protest at the statue of Sardar Patel at GPO. They wore black badges to register protest against the killing of the professor allegedly by ABVP activists at Ujjain last month. A number of varsity teachers converged at the Staff Club and planted saplings in the fond memory of the departed soul. The LUTA also called off their own proposed function to honour the teachers who retired during the last academic session. They visited the Patel Pratima to extend their solidarity with their degree college colleagues who were staging a peaceful demonstration against alleged killing of the professor.

Interestingly, taking cue from LUTA’s decision teachers of several degree colleges have resolved to distance themselves from student union elections.
