The Assam government has issued shoot-at-sight orders in parts of Tinsukia in wake of the recent incidents of violence in the area.
An indefinite curfew was imposed late Friday night after the police opened fire on a 20,000-strong crowd in this district, about 520 kilometres from Guwahati.
Nine protestors were killed and 20 were injured when the police opened fire to disperse the crowd that tried to set ablaze a police station in protest against the death of a local villager while in Army custody last weekend.
Seven persons were killed on Friday after the attack while two succumbed to their injuries on Saturday.
At least two dozen policemen were also injured in retaliatory attacks by the mob.
"Teargas shells were first used to disperse the crowd. But that did not have an effect. So the police had to open fire in which five persons were killed and one injured succumbed later," Tinsukia district police chief Debojit Hazarika said.
"A paramilitary trooper was lynched by the mob. At least two weapons and a few wireless sets were taken away, besides a few government vehicles being set ablaze," said Bhaskar Mahanta, Assam Police DIG said.
