A shopkeeper was booked for fraudulently selling hundreds of electric fans using fake labels of a reputed brand.
In a raid conducted in one of the shops at Sector 15 on Jharsa Road, police seized two dozens of duplicate Usha fans with fake labels of the electronic company pasted on them.
A team of investigative agency Brand Protectors India Investigators (BPII) also took part in the raid. The agency was contacted by Usha after it got to know about the ill-practice.
After the firm approached BPII, it mapped and investigated key markets in Gurgaon and zeroed-in one of the key peddlers.
A case of fraud under Section 420 of the IPC and Section 63 of the Copyright Act, 1958 was registered at Civil Lines police station.
The retailer had till date sold 1,500 pieces of the fan.
"Counterfeiters start with low value goods but eventually graduate to counterfeiting high value. Revenue losses to government, brand owners and risk to human life -- that's what counterfeit and duplicate goods do. Zero tolerance should be the policy against counterfeits," Dhirendra Singh, director of BPII, told HT.
