Lodged at Kokrajhar reserve relief camp in Assam
Till Monday evening, 47-year-old Asgar Ali led a poor but contented life in Dimoligaon village of Kokrajhar district in Assam with his family of four. A petty farmer, Ali’s life was in for a tragic turn when Bodo-Muslim clashes flared in the lower Assam district.
“We were taken unawares when the Bodo miscreants attacked our village and set ablaze all the houses. I somehow managed to escape but could not save any of my belongings. We have lost everything,” said a pensive Ali on Wednesday. “We took shelter at the relief camp in Duamari High School.”
The camp, however, provided anything but relief. To add to the tales of misery, melancholy and despair for people suddenly uprooted from their homes, there was more of the same in store.
On Tuesday night, armed miscreants started firing at the relief camp. “At first, around 11 policemen countered the attackers. But, when the situation started looking hopeless, they asked us to flee. Some of us were able to escape, but there are many others who are still missing,” said Ali.
He alleged that the administration has not been providing any food or water. The women and children are the worst sufferers. Ali is now in Kokrajhar Reserve relief camp in Kokrajhar town.
