The agitation on Saturday was against the alleged killing of Tufail Ahmad Matoo (17) on June 11 by the security forces in a stone-pelting encounter.

Instead, Baramulla, 50km north of Srinagar, observed a shutdown on Saturday.

Protestors in the city were angry at the Hurriyat Conference’s remark that the body had identified some Baramulla stone-throwers who were backed by government agencies.

"Our innocent youth are detained by police and no one speaks for them," a protester said.

The city, besides Sopore and Srinagar, witnesses stone-pelting nearly every Friday and on days of shutdown.

About 600 young people gathered in Baramulla town on Friday and told media persons that they would neither indulge in stone-pelting nor follow any course of action given out by the Hurriyat Conference.

"The Hurriyat has disgraced us," one of them said.

They said earlier the Hurriyat backed stone-pelting and termed it a tool of resistance. "Now they ridicule it for reasons only known to them."
