Benegal, a four-time national award winner, is directing Mahadev, almost 25 years after making Mandi, a comedy about politics and prostitution.

"I'm enjoying my comeback to comedy and I want to see my audiences laugh this time," Benegal told Reuters by telephone.

"As a filmmaker I would love to see my audiences sometimes cry, sometimes ponder over the subject and now I want to see them laugh their hearts out," he said.

Mahadev tells the story of a village cut off from the technological advancements such as satellite television and the Internet.

"It is a film about these villagers who have no access to the modern technology that globalisation have brought into the country," said Benegal.

The veteran filmmaker also said he likes to explore different genres.

"I don't want to limit myself to a particular pattern," he said. "Now a lot of people are sticking on to the genre they have found success but I believe a filmmaker has to explore different subjects and genres. It makes one complete."

The film stars Amrita Rao in the main lead.
