The board of directors of Kasturi and Sons Ltd (KSL), the company that brings out The Hindu, appointed national bureau chief Siddharth Varadarajan as editor of the newspaper on Wednesday.
Editor in chief N Ram told HT Varadarajan would take charge from July 31. “We are going forward with our professionalisation programme,” he said.
“First, as editor he will report to me. In the second phase, Varadarajan will be responsible for selection of news under the Press and Registration of Books Act,” Ram said.
The KSL Board took the decision by a majority of 7 to 5, overruling the objections of board members N Murali, N Ravi, Malini Parthasarathy, Nirmala Lakshman and Nalini Krishnan.
Following the decision, N Ravi, Malini Parthasarathy and Nirmala Lakshman resigned from the positions of editor, executive editor, and joint editor respectively.
N Murali, Ram’s younger brother, announced that he would retire on reaching the age of 65 on August 11 this year.
Ram confirmed the resignations. “It is true they have resigned. Nobody asked for their resignations. They have resigned of their own accord. But since they were made in writing, they will take immediate effect,” he added.
