Patil's statement came in the wake of opposition by some political parties and religious groups to the recent decision banning garlands and coconuts into the temple owing to security reasons.

After their failure to create panic in the metropolis through blasts in trains and mosques, the terrorists have now targeted temples, Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, said after a meeting organised to discuss milk adulteration cases.

Restrictions on garlands and coconuts into the temple were imposed in view of the possibility that terrorists would put bombs in coconuts, he said, adding, police have been asked to avoid inconvenience to devotees caused due to these restrictions.

On the spate of robberies in and around the city in the last few days, he said investigations into 65 per cent of the cases were complete and police have arrested three gangs of robbers.

Officials of the Food and Drugs Administration department were present at the meeting.
