Sidhu, also a maverick cricket commentator, was greeted by a number of BJP and SAD workers led by local MLA Surjit Singh Rakhra when he emerged out of the jail.

The BJP's former Amritsar MP and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu were released from the prison this afternoon, a day after they secured bail from the Supreme Court.

Though the Supreme Court granted him bail on Friday, he could not be released on Friday itself as the orders reached Patiala prisons late on Friday evening.

Sidhu and Sandhu had surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Chandigarh and were sent to the Patiala jail on Thursday and had moved the apex court for bail.

The duo was sentenced to three-year rigorous imprisonment for causing death of Patiala resident Gurnam Singh during a scuffle following an accident.
