Sikh unrest: 'Ensure law and order in Mumbai'

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh directs senior police officials to ensure that law and order situation in suburban Mumbai and elsewhere.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Saturday directed senior police officials to ensure that law and order situation in suburban Mumbai and elsewhere does not go out of hand in the backdrop of unrest among Sikhs following firing by guard of Dera Sachcha Sauda chief.

"Deshmukh has instructed top officials to monitor the situation and take all necessary measures to curb outbreak of violence", an official in the Chief Minister's office said.

Deshmukh also announced Rs two lakh compensation to the kin of the person killed in yesterday's firing and Rs 25,000 each to those injured in the incident.

A person was killed when a bodyguard of Dera Saccha Sauda chief Ram Rahim Singh opened fire at a Sikh group outside a suburban mall protesting against the spiritual guru on Friday.
