Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states may face disruption in electricity supply as coal supply to NTPC's Ramagundam power plant may get hit by the indefinite strike by workers of Singareni Collieries demanding a separate Telangana state.
A senior official of NTPC, when contacted, said the company is aware of the problem and will review the situation if the strike continues for long.
"Apart from SCCL, we also get coal from South Eastern Coal fields in Chhattisgarh. As of today, we have sufficient stocks for our Ramagundam plant. We will review the situation if it (strike) continues further," the NTPC official said.
Power generated at Ramagundam's 2,600 MW plant goes to Pondicherry, Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
SCCL provides coal to six power plants with a combined power generation capacity of 6,000 MW in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Power plants located at Raichur in Karnataka and Parli in Maharashtra depend on SCCL for their coal requirements as also the state-owned projects of AP Genco and NTPC's Ramagundam super thermal power station, which supplies power to southern states.
"As many as 60,000 employees participated in the strike today affecting coal production to the extent of 1.3 lakh tons. If the strike continues for more than a week, supply of coal to various power plants would be hit and they would need to make alternate arrangements," an official of SCCL said.
