Sion society to adopt rainwater harvesting, avoid rain dance

“I read several reports on housing societies opting for rainwater harvesting to save water, and decided that we should also take up the cause,” said Shailesh Karia, the society’s secretary.

“We have taken consultations to set up a rainwater harvesting system in our society and will implement it soon,” he said. The residents of the Sion society have also decided to give up their annual rain dance for the festival this year, and will play a dry Holi with gulal so that they do not use too much water to wash off the colour.

The civic body is also engaging citizens to participate in water conservation. On March 1, the rainwater harvesting and water conservation cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had conducted a workshop with senior citizens to involve them in the process of spreading awareness about water conservation. “Senior citizens are very active in informing people about such issues and many of them have also taken initiatives in their locality to educate people about water conservation,” said Suprabha Marathe, who heads the cell.
