Sistema, RIL not to bid for spectrum

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Telenor, Tata Teleservices and Videocon today submitted applications to participate in the auction for 2G spectrum. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd (SSTL), which offers services under the MTS brand, will not bid for the airwaves.

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Telenor, Tata Teleservices and Videocon on Friday submitted applications to participate in the auction for 2G spectrum. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd (SSTL), which offers services under the MTS brand, will not bid for the airwaves.

Auctions will start from November 12.

Videocon is the only company that has applied for operating CDMA and GSM services throughout the country. "On November 11, we will take a final decision on the exact number of circles that we would bid for," said VN Dhoot, chairman, Videocon.

Sources said that Airtel has applied for four category 'C' circles. While, Bharti and Vodafone have applied for additional spectrum in the circles where they are already providing services., the rest will participate as new operators. Tata Teleservices has applied for three circles for CDMA spectrum.

Norway-based Telenor has submitted application without its partner Unitech Ltd. "A final decision on whether to participate or not will be taken before the auction starts," said a Telenor spokesperson.
