One of her creations was featured on the Oprah show as ‘one of the 10 must-haves in your closet’ last year. She retails at Harrods in London, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus in the US. We caught up with her for a chat.

Any formal training in fashion?
I have no formal training as such. Over the years I have ‘informed’ my eye ‘informally’ by collecting various pieces of fashion that had a common strand of casual elegance.

Tell us about your background and the story behind this interesting name.
I began designing clothes quite unconsciously at first and later it became my profession. My mother is an Indian and father, an Irish. I was born and brought up in Italy and married an Irishman whose name sounded Italian — so that’s the mystery behind my name.

Any Indian inspirations?
I come to India more often now and the country is becoming a big inspiration in my outfits. I also feel that the stylistic heritage of Italy is something which is well suited to the tastes of India.

Designers here that you admire?
Tarun Tahiliani, without a doubt. I love his saris. They are so elegant and glamourous.
