Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the situation was not conducive for polls in the state due to recent floods and warned that there would be no turnout in Srinagar if elections were rushed.
The six-year term of the 87-member assembly ends on January 19, 2015. There are reports of elections being planned in the state in December.
“My party (National Conference) has made it very clear that this is not the opportune time to hold the elections. We believe that at this point of time people are struggling to rebuild their life,” he said after meeting Union home minister Rajnath Singh.
He added that it was the Election Commission which has to take a final call on the issue.
“The capital city anyway had less than optimum turnout in elections. Tomorrow when zero percentage turnout will happen in Srinagar, who will you blame for that.
You certainly cannot blame me,” he said.
According to home ministry sources, Omar in his meeting with Rajnath Singh discussed the steps taken for relief and rehabilitation of the people affected in the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir.
Omar also termed the waving of ISIS flag in the Valley as an act by some idiots which was unfortunately being highlighted.
