Ironically, these very policemen were rewarded by SSP Akhil Kumar after Wednesday's encounter.

The police relented after late night negotiations between representatives of the families of the two alleged robbers—Mohd. Firoz and Mohd. Rais—and the district administration.

The cases were registered against sub-inspector H.N. Singh (injured during the alleged shootout) and five other policemen who took part in the operations.

But the name of Indirapuram station officer Jitendra Kalra, who led the encounter team, appeared nowhere. Kalra sustained injuries after he was chased and thrashed by rioters on Wednesday evening. Over a dozen other policemen were also injured in Wednesday's violence.

Police personnel who did not want to be quoted said the decision to file a case against them had hit their morale. A magisterial enquiry has also been ordered into the incident.

The post-mortem of the two alleged robbers was also conducted late Wednesday night under heavy security.
