Sixty more Tamil schools will be rebuilt in Malaysia, many with new buildings, under the second phase of the government's 100 million ringgit redevelopment programme, Malaysian Indian Congress president Samy Vellu said.

At least 72 schools had already been redeveloped under the first phase.

There are about 525 Tamil schools in the country, with more than 300 falling under the partially-aided government institute category.

Vellu, the leader of Malaysia's largest ethnic Indian party, has said the MIC would continue to ensure the progress of Tamil schools with assistance from the Government.

Malaysia has a eight per cent population of ethnic Indians and most of them are Tamils.
