Senior Orissa police officer Jaswinder Singh, who was killed this week, was cremated on Thursday in his native village in Punjab with full state honours.
The cremation took place at Bodal near Dasuya town, 45 kms from Hoshiarpur.
The pyre was lit by his twin sons amid heart-rending scenes and hundreds came to pay their respects to the son of the soil who made it big as a police officer despite his humble background.
Punjab's Technical Education Minister RC Dogra and director general of police (DGP) SS Virk were among those present on the occasion.
He was posted as deputy inspector general (DIG) of police in Rayagada district of Orissa that has seen Maoist violence.
Singh was killed on Monday and it was initially suspected that Maoists had shot him dead. The Orissa police, however, arrested his two security guards and driver charging them with murder.
The family of the slain officer demanded a probe into the killing saying that the Orissa government was not sharing any information with them.
"All that we have come to know about his killing is through media reports. The Orissa government has not bothered to tell us anything," Singh's wife Paramjit Kaur, a college lecturer, told reporters at the village.
