Small bites leave bad taste

When The Bakerie opened at Worli, we were more than willing to give it a try. Enter and six high stools welcome patrons to the small seating area, adjacent to the live sandwich counter. The menu lists several varieties of croissants, quiches, salads, pastries, drinks, sandwiches and puffs. But we are told that our choice is limited.

Small needn’t always be a bad thing. Several hole-in-the-wall eateries that boast of delectable dishes and regular clientele are testimony to that. So when The Bakerie opened at Worli, we were more than willing to give it a try. Enter and six high stools welcome patrons to the small seating area, adjacent to the live sandwich counter. The menu lists several varieties of croissants, quiches, salads, pastries, drinks, sandwiches and puffs. But we are told that our choice is limited.

To start off, we order a Kalimiri Kebab croissant (Rs 50) and a Sooper Dooper sandwich (Rs 110). The live sandwich counter means you get multiple bread varieties (sesame crusted, garlic, wholewheat etc) as well as a wide range of veg and non-veg toppings and sauces to add to your set sandwich, thus allowing some creative cooking. There is no limit on the number of toppings and sauces, so a mix and match is possible.

The croissant is average, but the sandwich disappoints. The bread isn’t fresh, neither are the veggies. So we try the cheese croissant (Rs 40). But even something so basic fails to impress. The overdose of cheese makes if difficult to eat. To see if non-veg options are better, we try the Spicy Italian sandwich (Rs 140) and the Chicken Bbq salad (Rs 120). Neither lift our ever-falling hopes.
