Looking at the performance and achievements of students at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will now be just a click away.

This is so because the university is set to launch a smart card system, the first of its kind in India. The smart card, to be given to each student, will carry information on factors like admission, projects, assignments, attendance, practicals and semester results.

There are about 13 lakh students pursuing higher studies in the university who will be provided with the card.

"The card will help students keep an authentic record of their activity in the university and also aid them to present themselves in a better way in the market," IGNOU vice-chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai said.

The e-initiative will also help in conducting better the courses and monitor the performance of students on an individual basis, he said. Each student will be issued a smart card with a unique password which can be used on specified computers having the software to read the data.

To start with, the university will issue 100 cards on a trial basis, he said. Student will have liberty to modify data like bank account numbers.

Besides personal data, information on admission date and schedule of examinations will be fed in the cards to help the students.
