“We are planning introduction of Smart Cards from April 1,” principal secretary (transport), Rajemdra Bhunwal told the HT Lucknow Live. He said that the Government had already received a proposal from the transport department and was busy making a policy with regard to inviting tenders etc.

To be designed as per the specifications of Smart Card Operating System for Transport Applications (SCOSTA), the smart driving license cards akin to ATM cards or credit cards will fitted with a micro processor chip of 4 KB capacity. The checking transport staff will put the card into a hand-held computer, and the all the details of the card holder will immediately flash on the computer screen.

These cards will have visual and machine readable zones. The visual zone will have name, photo, age, address etc of the card holder whereas machine zone will have holder’s finger prints, his complete history and a provision for endorsement. “The proposed cards will prevent one from giving false information or showing forged documents,” claimed transport department’s finance controller, Prabhu Dayal.
