Smooth as Silk: That?s Peters? note

Karl Peters, one of the few musicians who play the five-string bass guitar, was in to perform in the Legends Of India concert series.

He is one of the few in the world who play the five string bass guitar that normally has four strings. And he wants to go a step further. “I want to play the six stringed bass guitar,” says Karl Peters, in town as part of the world music band Silk, to perform in the Legends Of India concert series.

And what else? “I would like to give something back to the Lord who has given me so much,” he adds. This means, he wants to form a gospel band which will make the teachings of Christ little easier and a lot more entertaining.

As part of Silk, which has the likes of Shankar Mahadevan, Sivamani and Louis Banks, Peters, meanwhile, has been travelling a lot across the world. This keeps him occupied, but this apart he is also playing with his 25-year old son who has just come back after finishing a course from Drummers Collective, USA. “It is great playing together. We go Dutch – I try to learn a few things from him about new age music while he picks up nuggets of the old world from me,” says the musician who likes to wear stretchable and relaxing clothes.

So what does he have to say about Indian music today? “It lacks soul, it lacks concepts, ideas or a thought. I prefer melody,” he says. Not surprisingly then, the music of Kal Ho Naa Ho – “a mix of dance and trance” – kept his feet busy all throughout the season. After all, Peters is a man who loves to party.
