Smuggled explosives and arms for ULFA seized

A huge consignment of explosives and arms and ammunition smuggled in from Bangladesh and destined for ULFA's 28 'battalion', currently on a violence spree, was seized from a vehicle from the Jorabat area.

The explosives were being ferried by a middle level ULFA militant in a vehicle last night and was meant to reach Tinsukia via Shillong, city senior superintendent of police Nitul Gogoi told reporters here today.

Among the seizures were 10 kg of powerful explosives, 15 grenades of Austrian make, 20 .9 mm pistols, 450 rounds of ammunition for 7.62 calibre pistols, 80 rounds of other ammunition and 18 magazines, Gogoi said.

An ULFA militant Prabal Chetia and the driver of the vehicle Birendra Mahato were arrested, he said.

The arms and ammuntion were to be delivered to the 'commander of ULFA's 20 'battalion' Prabal Neog, he said.

The duo used Cherapunji corridor in Meghalaya for for smuggling in the consignment from Bangladesh, he said.
