I am planning to visit Assam (Guwahati, Kaziranga, etc) and Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang, Bomdila, etc) for a period of 14 days. Is the first week of November a good time? I want to see snow but at the same time avoid enduring the cold weather. If November isn’t a good option, please suggest an alternative time period.

I went to Guwahati and Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang) last December-January. Though there was no snow in some parts of Tawang and it was cold, it wasn't too bad. It is better to visit these places in the winter rather than monsoon, so as to escape the landslides. I don’t know for sure, but I think there will be rains in November. So it is advisable to delay your trip by a couple of weeks (if possible).

I am planning to visit the Araku valley during the third week of September. Is September the right time? I will first be visiting Vijayawada for a conference and then travel to Araku. What’s the best mode of transport — road or rail? I will be with my wife, so where in Araku can I stay? What are the must-see places, as I will be there only for a night?

The third week of September is definitely a good time. I had visited Araku in July last year, and it was simply superb. If you cannot spend much time there, I suggest you take a state Volvo to Vizag. We hired a private cab at Vizag, and the road journey was very good.

There aren’t too many in Araku to see. Jungle bells takes you on a morning trek, and you shouldn’t miss that.
