Snowfall brings down mercury in Kashmir Valley

Parts of Kashmir received fresh snowfall and rains on Sunday bringing down the minimum temperatures in most areas of the valley and Ladakh region.

Parts of Kashmir received fresh snowfall and rains on Sunday bringing down the minimum temperatures in most areas of the valley and Ladakh region.

"Fresh snowfall was recorded in many areas of Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pahalgam and Qazigund," an official of the meteorological department here said.

"Srinagar received snowfall and rains equivalent to 4 mm of rainfall," the official said.

"The city recorded a minimum temperature of 0.3° Celsius on Sunday night, compared to -0.6° Celsius on Saturday," added the official.

Mercury in Qazigund settled at -1.2° Celsius, as against the Saturday night's -1.4° Celsius. The town received 3.4 cm of snow.

Pahalgam received 12.3 cm of fresh snow, with mercury settling at -4.2° Celsius, down two degrees from Saturday night's -2.2° Celsius.

Night temperature Gulmarg went down by over one degree to record low of -8.8° Celsius as against the -7.0° Celsius recorded on Saturday.

Kokernag and Kupwara towns registered minimum temperatures of -2.6° Celsius and -0.7° Celsius respectively. Kokernag received 2 mm of rainfall.

The data for Kargil was not available, the official said.

The met department has predicted the weather would remain mainly dry over the state.
