The high altitude areas in Lahaul and spiti and Pangi and Rohtang pass in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday experienced mild snowfall, causing a sharp fall in mercury even as monsoon withdrew completely from the region with 9% deficient rainfall.
The minimum temperature dropped to 5.9 degree in Kalpa in Kinnaur district and 6.5 degree in Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti while the mercury hovered around freezing point in high altitude tribal areas and mountain passes.
Precipitation occurred at some places with Saloni recording 23 mm of rains,followed by Jogindernagar 11 mm, Kumarsen 6 mm and Manali 2 mm.
The minimum temperature dipped to 10.5 degree in Solan and Bhuntar, 13.5 degree in Shimla and 14.1 degree Sundernagar, two to four degree below normal.
After good rains in August, the state experienced below normal precipitation in September to end the current monsoon season on a deficient note.
The state received 732.5 mm rain from June 1 to September 30 as against the normal precipitation of 803.1 mm, a shortfall of 9%.
The total rainfall from June 1 to July 31 was deficient by 22 per cent but the shortfall came down to 6 per cent as the state received 321 mm of rain in August against the normal precipitation of 273 mm, which is 18 per cent higher than normal.
