The overall pass percentage was, however, pegged at 77.16 per cent, (2.56 per cent better than last year's). Over 21,000 students scored 90-95 per cent and 1,600 scored 95 per cent and above. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas secured the best results.

Thirteen disabled students scored more than 90 per cent marks with Govind R. of Kollam, Kerala, topping with 95.2 per cent. The surprise this year was the performance in social science, which until now was a major spoiler for students appearing in Class X exams. This year, 96.39 per cent passed the paper, while 807 managed full marks.

The improvement is being attributed to internal assessment for the subject that was introduced for the first time this year. "The accent of the move was to assess a child's real understanding in the subject rather than check his speed," said CBSE chairperson Ashok Ganguly.
